TV Wall Mounts - Will This Wall Mount Work for my TV?

By Rob Burns
TV wall mounts are not an everyday purchase, but are becoming more and more popular with the advent of thinner TVs.  Mounting a TV on a wall or hanging one from the ceiling is a popular space saving tactic that will continue to grow as technology continues to make sets everlighter.
When buying a new Flat screen TV, consumers have the option of paying a 300% mark up at the big box stores on accessories such as wall mounts and cables.  However the advent of the Internet means that there are lower priced options available for those who care to look online. Unfortunately, the consumer needs to be aware that all TV wall mounts are not created equal.  Some low priced mounts are so thin that they will actually bend when installed.  This is not the kind of mount you want to trust your $1,000 plasma tv to hang from your living room wall.
Aside from quality, there are other issue that the consumer may wish to address.  The most common question is, “Will this mount work for my TV?” Due to past incompatibility among audio video components produced by various manufacturers, the formation of VESA was established in 1988. Vesa stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. VESA has introduced standards to the TV wall mounting industry and most large brand TV manufacturers adhere to these standards when selling their TVS.
One of the things that consumers need to know when buying a TV wall mount is whether the VESA mounting pattern listed on their TV specs corresponds to any wall mount they are considering.  The VESA number can easily be found online by searching the specs of their Television manufacturer and model number.   When shopping for a TV wall mount, consumers need to look to see whether the wall mount they are interested in purchasing has a listed VESA number..  TV mounts generally accommodate a range of VESA mounting size, so a single mount may be able to work with a range of TV sizes. You can also find the VESA standards in the literature that comes with the mounting bracket.
So if you are looking to purchase a quality wall mount and save money at the same time, check on VESA before whipping out your Visa.
